According to new research in a study of 50,000 CVs by LiveCareer, the average word count of a CV in 2023 stands at 503 words, a 61% hike from the 312 average words in 2018.

This is thought to be due to people including more sections, such as adding their achievements or more education/work-based training certificates. This increase in word count has now taken the average CV page count to over 2, meaning that we are seeing an emphasis on more information.

As a team of Career Mentors, we are delighted to see the increase in the amount of detail job seekers are putting into their CVs.

One of the biggest issues we have when representing an individual in their job search is that they are not specific enough about the details of their past and present roles, failing to include specific systems, industry knowledge, achievements and key moments where they have added value.

In our opinion, 503 words and 2-3 pages is a good start, but realistically, if you have been in your career for over 10 years, then there’s always more you can say.

What do you think? Is it a good thing that CVs are getting longer?
